There’s also a massive 86-inch TV in the living room with streaming services as well as a Blu-Ray DVD with dozens of recent films. Boffi designs are carried throughout the four full bathrooms, which feature open steel and glass rain showers and Gessi Rectangolo and Duravit fixtures.

Green and Grand: 5 Formal Gardens for Earth Day

Surrounded by magnificent boulders, the path goes through a small valley filled with desert plants. It can be rocky in places, but it's mostly flat; the hardest parts are similar to climbing short sets of stairs. Furnishings continue the aesthetic of the house, including a glass bed frame and an exposed glass shower. Chris shares that they’d often buy art together to experience and exchange, and that Holzer had invested in his film, Spring Breakers (2012). A separate one-bedroom OMD prefab guesthouse is automatically added for groups of seven or eight guests.

The fine printNeed-to-know information for guests at this property

"You're buying a work of art — something that can't be found in any other place on Earth." The home's two guest rooms feature king-sized beds raised on  platforms of black and white striped marble that are built into the wall. Conveniently near one of the park's visitor centers, Joshua Tree Saloon is a honky tonk-style dive bar and restaurant serving staples like burgers, tacos and wings. The widest variety of luxury, boutique and family-friendly resorts are in Palm Springs, though that's about 45 minutes away. Staying closer to the park entrance is more convenient, though lodging will be more limited.

Chef’s Kitchen

Since expanded to 90 acres, this land now situates the Invisible House, a monolithic, 5,500-square-foot smart residence cantilevered 100 feet off the ground. Naturally, all the home tech you can imagine is subtly incorporated into the fabric of the building. Each bedroom is equipped with remote-controlled blackout shades and the structure is set adjacent to rocks for passive solar heating and cooling; the Solarcool glass exterior uses reflective/ refractive light filtering. The kitchen is chef-ready and, with grand vistas plus total privacy, entertaining is effortless and memorable. The remaining areas, including four bedrooms and bathrooms, are separated by white partitions rather than doors with views of the desert.

Joshua Tree Was California’s Hottest Housing Market. What Happened?.

But during the pandemic, the town’s two-hour proximity to Los Angeles, and the social media-fueled popularity of Joshua Tree national park, led to one of the largest increases in housing prices in the state. The result has been a worsening local housing crisis, with many longtime residents and local service industry employees saying that skyrocketing rental costs have forced them out of their homes. Just a few years ago, Joshua Tree, a tiny town in California set next to a stunning national park, was a refuge for artists and oddballs, a place where locals said it was possible to rent an apartment for $500 a month. The Invisible House, constructed in 2019 by film producers Chris and Roberta Hanley, has hosted celebrities like Lizzo, Alicia Keys, Ariana Grande and The Weeknd, and been featured in the Netflix series The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals.

Inside the Invisible House in Joshua Tree, a 100-foot pool spans the width of the living room, offering an undeniably extraordinary way to look out into the surrounding desert. Besides the pool, the interiors of the 5,500-square-foot home also include four bedrooms, three baths, and a 222-square-foot projection wall. “Bringing the Invisible House to market for the first time ever is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Aaron Kirman and Matt Adamo, the property’s listing agents from AKG | Christie’s International Real Estate, said in a statement. The predominant interior statement, however, comes from the 100-foot, HTP-solar-heated, freshwater swimming pool, complete with programmable LED lights and music, which spans the main living space.

It is elevated above the ground on cylindrical concrete columns, forming a cantilever at one end. Designer Tomas Osinsk and Los Angeles film producer Chris Hanley have created a mirrored house near Joshua Tree National Park, designed to look like a New York skyscraper on its side. It’s only fitting, then, that this flat 22-storey skyscraper is created from mirrored glass that melts into the spectacular landscape, allowing you to connect with desert nature in the most jaw-dropping way imaginable.

Off the pool area and at the center of the kitchen is an oversized island with high-end cabinetry crafted in Italy by Boffi. Vacation rentals are perhaps the most common lodging option to be found near the park, and listings saturate the towns of Joshua Tree, Twentynine Palms and Yucca Valley. Here, you'll find everything from luxury homes to geodesic domes and yurt-style tents. If you'd like to cycle in Joshua Tree National Park, the best place to do so is on backcountry roads. There, you'll find more than 1,000 square miles of wilderness with dirt roads for mountain bikes, as well as four-wheel-drive vehicles. Finally, for a collection of moderate to difficult backcountry hikes, visit the Black Rock area of Joshua Tree National Park.

Finding real-estate comps for such unique architecture located in a remote desert town with a population of just thousands, is impossible, according to Kirman.

The 90-acre property is owned by film producer Chris Hanley, who is known for such films as The Virgin Suicides, and American Psycho. He designed the building along with Tomas Osinski, an artist, architect, and industrial designer. Osinski has collaborated with the likes of Frank Gehry (designer of the Guggenheim Museum) on several projects, including the gorgeous Delft porcelain fountain at the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. In the adjacent town of Twentynine Palms, Holiday Inn Express and SureStay Plus by Best Western offer standard but comfortable accommodations with one or two beds and outdoor pools. Both are a short drive from the park's entrance, with breakfast included. Hanley, the Los Angeles film producer behind American Psycho, worked with architect Tomas Osinski to develop a long and slender steel-frame house clad in mirrored, tempered glass typically used for skyscrapers.

Adamo said the rate for production is even higher, with past rentals earning $1,000 an hour or as much as $12,000 for a full day. Overnight fees start at $15 per night, and amenities depend on each specific location. It's important to research locations ahead of time and come prepared with what you'll need for the entirety of your stay.

When it came to the Invisible House, the Hanleys’ primary goal was to keep the architecture simplified to appreciate and live amidst the impressive natural setting. Initially, they drove a 720-square-foot prefabricated house built by Jennifer Siegal (founder and principal of Los Angeles-based firm Office of Mobile Design) to the desert. However, because it was less than 20-feet wide, county requirements necessitated the construction of a larger home on the land. A luxurious 100-foot solar-heated indoor swimming pool takes up much of the interior.

The home is oriented to face east so that residents and guests can experience a truly breathtaking sunrise over the desert. The property has its own 4000-foot peak and is filled with hiking trails to explore. Guests have direct walk-on access to the national park’s Desert View Conservation Area. While secluded, the Invisible House is located just 10 minutes from downtown Joshua Tree. One reviewer called it an “inhabitable work of art in the middle of a completely unique landscape.” It has been seen in design and lifestyle publications like Architectural Digest, Dezeen, TMZ, Business Insider, and Apartment Therapy — here’s why.
